I'm gonna be honest, I'm a massive sucker for TLoS stuff, and I personally like the DoTD model, mostly because I have lots of experience with DoTD and I've beaten it 100% several times. I can understand why some people may not like the model, I can see that. Personally, I think it holds a special place in my heart, and represents the definitive Spyro I love the best, because the "Legend" trilogy is my favorite series in the Spyro Franchise for a multitude of reasons. The cherry on top with this kind of model, the voice of Elijah Wood for Spyro reflects it relatively well to me, and I LOVE the voice so damn much. When I think of Spyro, his voice has to be Elijah Wood. That's how I personally see things in Spyro stuff like this, but everyone has their own opinion, and I won't hold anything against them.
